Clyde H. Yates, 94, of Salem, retired Roanoke County School principal, went home to be with our Lord, Dec. 29, 2011. He was born in Leemaster, Va., on Aug. 22, 1917, a son of the Rev. Joe and Rosa Hagy Yates, both pioneer families of Buchanan County.
Clyde was a devoted husband and proud father who put God and family first in his life. As a life-long Southern Baptist and current member of Salem Baptist Church, he held offices in various capacities, and truly enjoyed teaching the Men’s Sunday School Class. He attended Emory and Henry College and University of Virginia and received Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education. He was deeply loved and cherished by all who knew him. Favorite hobbies included gardening, fishing, hunting and carpentry.
Clyde is survived by his loving and caring wife of 64 years Ruth Norris Yates; daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Tom Ferguson, New City, New York; son and daughter-in-law Larry and Christie Marshall Yates, of Stephenson, Va.; grandchildren: the Rev. Guy and Joy Ferguson, Auburn Hills, Mich.; Robert and Holly Ferguson, Springboro, Ohio; Zachary Yates, Winchester; Colby and Kristin Yates, Berryville; Amanda Yates, Radford University; three sisters: Alta Lindsay, Vansant, Va.; Gaynelle Medcalf, Thomaston, Ga.; Floss Baldwin, Vansant; very special sisters-in-law: Nadine Stevenson, Indianapolis, Ind.; Peggy Phillips, Vinton; Peggy Yates, Vansant; Bessie Norris, Fla. brothers-in-law: Truett Orrick, Denver, Col.; Ralph Keene, Vansant, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Clyde was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corp and served in World War II. The family wishes to thank the Veterans Hospital and Palliative Care Unit for their excellent end of life care.
The funeral service was held on Dec. 31 at Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Everett Kier officiating, assisted by Dr. Sam Harvey. Interment followed in Sherwood Memorial Park.
