Winston elected as Roanoke County Sheriff
ROANOKE COUNTY– Democrat Mike Winston won the race for Roanoke County Sheriff with 64 percent of the vote.
The race was to complete the term of retired Roanoke County Sheriff Gerald Holt. Winston was Holt’s longtime Chief Deputy, and is a 40-year veteran of the Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office. He has been serving as interim Sheriff since March.
“I’m just, of course, very pleased with the results…We had a game plan, and we stuck to the game plan the entire time,” Winston said on Wednesday morning. “We told [Roanoke County citizens] about where we are as a sheriff’s office–what we have done…and what we will do in the future. I think the people of Roanoke County chose to continue with what they had.”
Winston’s opponent Mike Stovall, owner of Alert Driver Training in Vinton and current Chairman of the Roanoke County School Board, ran as an Independent.
“I want to thank the over 10,000 voters in this County that put their trust in me to be the next Sheriff in Roanoke County,” Stovall said on Wednesday morning. “I am thankful for all the people that worked on my campaign, the support that I received throughout this county, and I wish Sheriff Winston well.”
Stovall says he is not ruling out another run for Sheriff in the future.
