WBHS Air Force JROTC Armed Exhibition team wins state championship
VINTON–Cadets representing the William Byrd High School Air Force JROTC program competed in the 8th annual Virginia Air Force JROTC State Drill Championships on April 26, 2013. The event was sponsored by the Virginia State Air Force Association and held at Atlee High School in Mechanicsville just outside of Richmond.
All Air Force Junior ROTC units across the state were pitted against one another in six different events: Color Guard, Inspection, Armed and Unarmed Regulation, and Armed and Unarmed Exhibition.
The WBHS Armed Exhibition Team led by Justin Fix won the state championship in that event. Team members are Sean Schwallenberg, James Hodges, Michael Adams, Justin Creasy, Katelyn Townley, Kwame Legans, Tucker Solander, and Matthew King.
The Color Guard brought home a trophy for finishing in sixth place. Patrick Hash is the Commander of the Guard. Members are Makayla Clemmer, Katelyn Townley, and Seth Hurley.
The Inspection and Unarmed Exhibition Teams earned Honorable Mention by finishing in seventh and ninth places, respectively.
WBHS took seventh place in the tournament overall.
The cadets were rewarded for their hard work and dedication during the year with a trip to Busch Gardens after the tournament.
Major John Napier is the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor for the cadets; Senior Master Sergeant Paul Richardson is their Aerospace Science Instructor.
Students from all Roanoke County high schools are eligible to enroll in the Air Force JROTC program at William Byrd High School.
