Vinton Town Council approves purchase of rights of way and easements by Appalachian Power Company

By Staff Writer

VINTON–Vinton Town Council met in Chambers on December 20 for their regular third Tuesday session.

The main item on the agenda was consideration of a request from Appalachian Power Company to purchase several rights of way and easements on property owned by the Town in order to complete the Huntington Court Transmission Line.  This project includes a new 138kV power line for the Huntington Court substation in Roanoke City. The agreed upon purchase price was $126,205.

After a public hearing, Town Council passed the ordinance approving the conveyance of the rights of way and easements on property at the old Vinton Landfill, lots on Third Street and Walnut Avenue, and small slivers of property on Booker Street and 11th Street.

Construction will begin on the project in the first quarter of 2012 with a goal of energizing the line in December 2012. The project is being completed for reliability purposes to insure continuity of power for the substation.

In other business, Town Manger Chris Lawrence appointed Joey Hiner to serve as Interim Public Works Director after the resignation last week of Mike Kennedy. That position is now being advertised and a replacement will be chosen within the next couple of months.

Council voted to cancel their regularly scheduled meeting on January 3. They will next meet on January 17, 2012.
