VINTON–Vinton will kick-off the holiday season with its annual tree lighting ceremony and Christmas parade on December 6, 2012. The tree lighting ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building. The William Byrd High School band will perform at 6:00, followed by the Floyd Ward Dance Ensemble with clogging and tap dance at 6:15. Joe Overfelt will provide Christmas music from 6:35 until the parade begins at 7:00 p.m.
The parade starts on Gus Nicks Boulevard, winds through downtown Vinton, and ends at the Vinton War Memorial on Washington Avenue. There are over 80 entries and six high school bands signed up to march the parade route.
At the conclusion of the parade, Santa will be found at an Open House at the War Memorial, along with cookies, hot chocolate, and more performances by the Floyd Ward Dancers. Parade winners will also be announced at the War Memorial.
The theme of this year’s parade is “Christmas in Paradise”. The Vinton Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the festivities. More information is available at www.vintonchamber.com. or by calling 343-1364.
From 4:00.until 7:00 p.m., the Vinton Breakfast Lions Club will be sponsoring their annual Spaghetti Supper at the VFW building on Lee Avenue, a tradition which began in the 1980’s. Proceeds go to the Needy Kids program which provides school supplies at the three area elementary schools: Herman L. Horn, W. E. Cundiff, and Bonsack Elementary on a rotating basis monthly.
Dinner (Eat-in or Carry out) includes spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, Texas Toast, dessert, and coffee or tea. Tickets are $5.00 in advance or $6.00 at the door. Children’s tickets are $4.00 in advance or $5.00 at the door. Tickets are available from any Breakfast Lions Club member. For more information on the spaghetti dinner call 342-8928.
