NEW CASTLE – In between the telephone ringing to set appointments and before her first customer came in, Amy Horton, owner of Unique Hair Salon, shared all the services that she alone offers her customers. And those services are many.
“I do: hair highlights, color and perms, iron out treatments, shampoos and sets, manicures, pedicures, waxing and cuts for men and women.”
Horton’s assistant Jerry Horton, whom people in Craig know as “Pop,” was helping to answer the phone and preparing the tanning bed for each customer. Jerry is a retired Assembly of God minister from Texas who has lived in Craig for about six years now.
Horton added, “My sister Gerri was pregnant and her husband Shaun VanDyke got deployed. We came here to help her. Even my son, Blake, wanted to move here, so we did.”
He is a graduating this year, and Horton shared that he wants to pursue a criminal justice field. He is currently looking into attending Virginia Western Community College or Liberty University.
Horton explained how she obtained the quaint little salon on a back street in downtown New Castle.
“I had been working at Shape It Too at IGA,” shared Horton. “Then one day at church, Brenda Bostic, owner of Unique Hair Salon, asked me if I would be interested in buying her business. She gave me a price in February of 2013, and today I am the proud owner of this building part where my salon is. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Shaun and Gerri VanDyke and my dad.”
Horton said she enjoys her work and meeting her customers from Craig County. Melissa May has been one of those customers for three years.
“I was a walk-in at Shape It Too,” stated May as Horton was styling her hair. “She has been cutting and fixing my hair ever since. However, my son Landon loves her as she cuts his hair also and gives him a mohawk. She adds colors to it now.”
May added, “When he gets his hair done, he thinks he’s a rock star.”
A tanning bed is also available at Unique.
“It is a bronzing bed with new bulbs,” Horton explained. “You can get a tan in 5 minutes of what a regular bed would take 15.”
She said she is offering a pre-spring special of unlimited tanning for $20 for the month of March. “People can get ready for the warm weather, prom, or just relax in the warmth of the bed,” added Horton.
Horton is involved in her church at Cornerstone Church of God of Prophecy, where she is on the Praise and Worship team. She is a member of the Craig County Business Association and participates in county events. “This year, I dressed in my chaps and gun for the ‘Carry-On’ day. I was called ‘Amy Oakley’ that day,” Horton said with a smile.
Horton and her family live off of Rt. 42. “It is quiet, peaceful, and I see a lot of God’s beauty on that mountain,” Horton shared.
The Unique Hair Salon is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and is located at 259 Middle Street. Horton is promoting a “Prom Special” with hair, nails and tanning packages.
