Ulrey, Donald Blaine “Lovey”

Donald Blaine “Lovey” Ulrey, 69, passed away at his Craig County home on June 25, 2011, with his devoted wife and best friend of 35 years, Sandra Ross Abbott Ulrey, at his side.

He was born to the late John William and Nettie Mary Hofauger Ulrey on March 31, 1942 in Roanoke. He was also preceded in death by brothers Jereld W. Ulrey and Kester Ulrey, sister Barbara Ulrey Campbell and father-in-law Charles L. Ross.

Don is survived by four sons, Scott J. Ulrey Sr. (Renee), Michael B. Ulrey (Rebecca), Christopher P. Ulrey (Rachel), Dean R. Abbott (Dana); one daughter, Holly M. Breen; six grandchildren, Scott Ulrey Jr., Melissa Camper, Shannon Morgan, Madison Ulrey, Hannah Ulrey, Gage Abbott; and one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Morgan.

Also surviving are two brothers, Ronnie L. Ulrey (Sue), Audie Ferris (Nancy); mother-in-law Ella S. Ross; sister-in-law Shirley Jo Ulrey, numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend whom Don considered a fifth son, Gary V. Moore (Debra).

Don was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for 29 years as an automotive damage appraiser.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years and was a member of Craig Healing Springs Christian Church. Don was a master woodworker and generously gave samples of his craft to many loved ones. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish for striper with Capt. Danny Dudley in the Clinch River, was a member of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club and loved to tell tales by the fire with his faithful “Garage Gang”. Don touched the lives of many and will be missed by all.

A private family graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 28, with Pastor Kenny Davis officiating. The family received friends on Monday at Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle.
