Two Salem teachers named semifinalists for $25,000 McGlothlin Award

SALEM – Two Salem teachers have been chosen as semifinalists in the $25,000 McGlothlin Awards. They are Beth Cook of Salem High School, and Judith Painter of Andrew Lewis Middle School. The announcements were made today, Nov. 5.

The semifinalists to through two more evaluation levels. Six finalists will be notified in January. One teacher from the secondary category will be chosen for the $25,000 award, one from the elementary category, and four runners-up will receive $1,000 each. The McGlothlin Awards will be announced at Radford in April 2013.

Of the award money to the selected teachers, $10,000 must be used for international travel to broaden the winners’ experience and enrich their classroom teaching.

In the next phase, semifinalists will submit a lesson plan with a video of themselves teaching the lesson in their classrooms. Judges will evaluate teachers’ instruction strategies, their classroom management, interaction with the community and instructional technology.
