Second man dies from three-car crash on Rt. 221

By Meg Hibbert

CAVE SPRING – A Bent Mountain man died at the scene, and later, a Pilot man died at the hospital after a three-car wreck this morning on Rt. 221 in the Cave Spring area.

Roanoke County Police said Steven P. Key, 52, of Bent Mountain was dead at the scene. Pilot resident James M. McNeil, 74, died at the hospital from injuries, police said.

Officers identified others in the wreck as Daniel J. McNeil, 44, also of Pilot, and Samantha M. Stump, 23, of Copper Hill. Neither was seriously injured, police said.

Police said Key was was driving south on Rt. 221, Bent Mountain Road, when his Toyota Prius crossed into the northbound lane. It hit a Subaru driven by James McNeil, who was going north. The Subaru ran off the road and rolled into an adjacent field, police said, and the Prius drifted back into the southbound lane.

Stump swerved into the south lane when she tried to avoid the other car, and hit Key’s vehicle, according to Investigating Officer S. Chuyka.

The investigation of the accident is continuing, police said.

The highway near Apple Grove Lane was closed in both directions from 10:20 a.m. when the wreck happened, until 2 p.m. Tuesday.

It was the second traffic death in two days in Roanoke County. The first was March 21 when the driver of a Jeep Cherokee died after his vehicle was hit head-on by a pickup truck driven by a New Castle man on Rt. 311 near the Roanoke County-Craig County line.

Both vehicles burned, and four people were transported to the hospital.
