Terrier gals battle but lose to Titans

By Brian Hoffman

VINTON – The William Byrd girls won’t be hosting a Christmas Tournament this year. Instead, they’ll be practicing.

Byrd has played host to the Terrier Christmas Classic for many seasons, but this year Cave Spring has taken over that tournament and the Terriers won’t be participating. Instead Byrd will go 16 days without a game, returning to the court January 6 for the Blue Ridge District opener with Lord Botetourt.

“It will be good to have some days off to rest a little, we’ve been struggling with some injuries,” said Byrd coach Tiffany Sardin. “We’ll give them a few days off and we’ll use the time to work on some things.”

Byrd goes into the holiday break at 2-7 after dropping a 49-44 decision at Hidden Valley Tuesday. The Terriers jumped to an early lead and were up 23-20 at the half only to have the Titans rally for the win.

“We played very well in the first half, everything was clicking for us,” said Sardin. “Then in the second half we made a few mistakes and Hidden Valley made us pay for them. Overall I was happy, the girls gave a great effort and the team played together well on both ends of the floor.”

Freshman Alexis Rafliff continued to impress, leading Byrd with 12 points. Kam Hagins had 10, Lindsey Carver had eight, and freshman Maggie Self had seven.

The Terriers also lost a couple games on the other side of the valley last week, dropping games to Salem and Glenvar on back-to-back nights. Last Thursday Byrd dropped a 61-31 game in Salem. Ratliff and Hagins had a dozen each.

On Friday the Terriers were at Glenvar and lost 56-32. Carver had 11 and Self had eight.
