NEW CASTLE – Craig County Supervisors Helen Looney and Jennifer Durling were recognized for their service to the county while on the Board of Supervisors.

Helen Looney who represents the Upper Craigs Creek District was elected to the Board in November 2003 and began serving her first term January 1, 2004. She chose not to seek re-election to a third term in 2011 because of health issues.

Looney’s decades of service to the county as well as the community have been impressive and extensive. She served on the Craig County School Board from June 2, 1992 until December 31, 1995 and was one of the original founders of the Craig County Historical Society when it was organized in 1980.

In 1983 she was the driving force behind the acquisition of the “Old Brick Hotel,” a building that is both architecturally and historically significant within the county.

Looney was also the driving force behind Craig County’s first greenway which runs from the site of the old VDOT to the school. Plans for this project have been in the making for several years. The project will be completed by the end of January, 2012 weather permitting.

Jennifer Durling who has served as supervisor for the Potts Mountain District for the past four years was recognized for her services to the county and the creativity she brought to the Board of Supervisors. She was elected to the Board in November of 2007 and began her first term on January 1, 2008.

During her time on the board she was appointed to represent Craig County on the Roanoke Valley Regional Commission, Fairview Homes Board, Total Action Against Poverty, the Regional Commission Certified Economic Development Committee and the Committee to review the Public Transportation needs for Craig County.

Because Durling provided representation for Craig County that had been unmet for a number of years, the county received a grant from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to study transportation needs for the county. The outcome of the study will be addressed in January.

Durling lost her seat in the November, 2011 election to Carl Bailey who will begin serving his first term on the Board of Supervisors in January, 2012.
