Supervisors back greater tourism role

By Gwen Johnson

CRAIG COUNTY – Tourism is gaining favor as an economic stimulus for Craig. At the January meeting, the Craig County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution requesting membership in the Virginia’s Western Highlands Travel Council.

The Travel Council is made up of Alleghany, Bath and Highland counties, Craig County Administrator Richard Flora explained. Membership in the organization would give the county state accreditation and increase its chances for funding opportunities. It is also a means to pooling resources with other counties, he added.

Craig has been working with Virginia’s Western Highlands for the past two years in conjunction with promoting tourism in the counties mentioned. Board members also recognized in order to develop economic growth within the community there needs to be an emphasis on increasing tourism, recreation and agriculture in the county.

With that in mind, the passed a resolution to support Alleghany County’s application for a planning grant to develop an “artisan trail” within the Virginia’s Western Highlands area. That would aid development of regional tourism, Flora said.

Supervisors approved an appropriation of $4,167 to the VWHTC as the county’s share of the cost to develop brochures for “Virginia’s Western Highlands.”

A resolution was passed in appreciation for the services George Feild has rendered to Craig County.

Feild has been instrumental in the development of both the county’s medical center as well as its dental clinic. He has served for over five years on the Craig County Planning Commission and more than a decade on the Industrial Development Authority.

Despite his busy schedule as an author who has had three books published, he still takes time to serve the community on various boards and community projects.

The next regularly scheduled board of supervisors’ meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m. in the circuit court room of the Craig County Courthouse.
