Students will play Appalachian music on June 7
NEW CASTLE – Students in Craig County High School’s Appalachian Music class will present a free year-end concert, playing traditional instruments, on Tuesday, June 7, at 4 p.m.
The students are ninth-through 12th graders taught by Phil Gilbert. They will be playing traditional instruments such as guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and bass. Selection include “Dixie,” “Liberty,” “Wildwood Flower” and bluegrass standards by Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, The Carter Family and other Americana music, Gilbert said.

“The students have been working hard on playing, singing harmony, and are very eager to showcase their abilities,” he said.
“This is a great opportunity to build a community interest in reviving traditional music with a new generation of students. I am amazed every day at the enthusiasm these students bring to class and am very happy to see kids walking around the school with instruments,” Gilbert added.
“I hope this enthusiasm continues in the future.”
