St. Clair, Ellen “Pud” Gatewood Gardner
Ellen “Pud” Gatewood Gardner St. Clair, 94, of Salem, passed away Feb. 8, 2011. Pud was born in Lafayette, Va., to Thomas Oscar and Sarah Elizabeth Northcross Gardner on Feb. 28, 1916.
Her husband, Leonard “Peaches” Jackson St. Clair, parents, 10 siblings and a son, Richard Lee St. Clair, all predeceased her. She is survived by her children: Sarah (Bill) Wing, Ooltewah, Tenn., Nancy Lynch, Salem, Lorain (Jim) Myer, Salem, and Jay (Linda) St. Clair, Daleville; daughter-in-law Paige St. Clair, Vero Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was a 51-year member of Bethel Baptist Church and a charter member of the Frank Eakin Sunday School class. She was currently a member of Lafayette United Methodist Church which was built in 1848 on land donated by her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Deyerle, a circuit rider of the Methodist faith. Funeral services were held at the Lotz Salem Chapel on Feb. 12 with burial to following in Sherwood Memorial Park. Peaches and Pud were married for 70 years and are together forever.
