The Salem boys’ foursome of Josh Stick, Braden Burns, Sam Sheffield and Joey Dishaw won the 200 Freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.77. The Spartans also took a second in the 200 Medley Relay with the team of John Sheffield, Nelson Helm, Sam Sheffield, and Dishaw.

Individually, Nelson Helm took a second in the 100 Breast and a fourth in the 500 Free. Sam Sheffield was second in the 100 Fly and sixth in the 200 Individual medley.

Hayden Helm took a fourth in the 100 Breast and a sixth in the 200 Free, while Josh Stick was fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 Free. Dishaw was fifth in the 50 Free, John Sheffield was seventh in the 100 Back and eighth in the 50 Free, and Donny Vogelsong was eighth in the 100 Fly.

For Glenvar, sophomore Ben Kennedy scored all 36 points for the Highlanders as he won the 100 Fly and finished third in the 200 IM. Ben had a time of 2:03.74 in the butterfly event. Glenvar was 13th in the boys’ team standings.

For the girls, Salem’s Allie Criss was second in the 100 Backstroke and fourth in the 500 Freestyle. Jane-Anna Caldwell was fourth in the 100 Free and Annie Forrester was eighth in the 100 Breast.

Glenvar’s Madison Butler made the finals in two events, but did not compete after feeling soreness in her shoulder after the preliminaries.

“We had 11 boys and five girls make it back to finals, which is the most we have ever had,” said Salem coach Beth Boothe. “Our relay teams are strong and getting faster, which is the best time of year to get faster. Our girls’ team is small, but they held their own against some tough competition.”

The Spartans swam in Christiansburg on Monday night and defeated Auburn, Pulaski County, and the host Blue Demons.

“Although we did not have our best times it’s always good experience to swim in the Christiansburg pool,” said Boothe.

The Spartans are now off until next Wednesday when they host Hidden Valley. Glenvar was scheduled to swim on Wednesday of this week against William Fleming at the Kirk Avenue YMCA in Roanoke.
