By Meg Hibbert

CAVE SPRING – Penn Forest Elementary School was locked down for almost 90 minutes this morning after the report of a man carrying a rifle nearby.

The lockdown was lifted at 8:55 a.m. when Roanoke County Police notified Principal Linda Wright there was no threat.

School officials emphasized students had not been told about the possible danger, and classes went on as usual.

School Board Member Fuzzy Minnix and central office staff were at the school to assist.

Police did not release any details about the man, who was spotted carrying a rifle and riding a bike near the Crescent Mart on Buck Mountain Road near the school, according to school officials.
