Salem teams swept in Super Bowl finals
The Salem sandlot football teams went 0-3 against the Bedford City/County champs last Saturday in the Sandlot Super Bowl. As usual, Bedford put some strong teams on the field at Salem Stadium for the Division III championship games.
The West Salem Cardinals came into the Super Bowl at 12-0, but Forest Black defeated the Cards, 24-8. Nic Basham scored a first half touchdown but West Salem trailed 16-8 at the half. The Cards were driving the ball after the kickoff to start the second half, but fumbled it away and never threatened seriously again against a stiff Forest defense.
In the Little Division the North Salem Eagles put 16 points on the board but gave up 32 as they were defeated by the South Bedford Bulldogs, 32-16. Avante Robinson had both touchdowns for North Salem and Robert Royston kicked two conversions successfully, but the North Salem defense couldn’t keep the Bulldogs out of the end zone.
In the final game of the day the Junior Division Salem champion Maroons were defeated by Forest Red, 25-2. Forest scored all 25 points in the first half, as Salem’s only points came when Riley Fox and Nick Ginnings sacked the Forest quarterback in the end zone in the third quarter.
Division II games, for Roanoke County, Botetourt County, and Franklin County teams, preceeded the Division III games at Salem Stadium. In the Division II PeeWee final the North Roanoke Chargers beat the Botetourt Wasps, 24-21, the Little Botetourt Cavaliers beat the Franklin County Hornets, 12-7, and the Junior Botetourt M-Pact beat the Hidden Valley Titans, 24-6.
