Salem officials not identifying person in fatal house fire

SALEM – As of this afternoon, fire investigators have not yet released the name of a person whose body was found in a burning house off Lynchburg Turnpike in East Salem today. According to Salem Fire & EMS, the fire call came in shortly before 9 a.m. on Aug. 9, and was reported as a possible explosion at the residence on Victoria Street.

Firefighters found the person while conducting a search and rescue operation. Thirty people from Salem Fire & EMS, and Roanoke Fire & EMS responded to the call, and Roanoke County Fire & Rescue provided staff to cover additional calls while equipment and staff were fighting the fire. Salem Fire Deputy Chief John Prillaman said firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes. The investigation is continuing.
