Radford HS wins state academic award

By Submitted

Radford logoFor the first time in school history, Radford High School has won the Virginia High School League’s Wells Fargo Cup for Academics – making it the best among the state’s Group 1A schools in academic competitions.

A points system based on performance in state competitions determined winners in each of VHSL six divisions (1A to 6A).  Schools earned academic activity points for outstanding participation in scholastic bowl, creative writing, theatre, forensics, debate, newspaper, yearbook and magazine.

Radford racked up 120 points to beat second-place Appomattox (85) and third-place Bland (80). The Bobcats won through strong showings in scholastic and theatre competitions, which earned 40 points each, and forensics, which garnered 30 points. RHS’ yearbook and newspaper won five points each to round out the school’s scoring.

Other state winners were Chantilly (Group 6A), Jefferson Science/Technology (5A), Harrisonburg (4A), Lafayette (3A) and Madison County (2A) – which won its 18th consecutive title.

Wells Fargo cups are awarded for both academics and athletics in each of the state’s six classifications. The winners for athletics will be announced in June, following the completion of spring championships.

    Rock on RHS!

That Drama Team is one to watch! Literally! If you hear of an RHS (or DIS) show, make it a priority to go and see it. Those kids are amazing!
