Pay to play to be revisited

By Montgomery Publishing

The Montgomery County School Board has decided to revisit the controversial decision to charge for participation in athletics and other Virginia High School League activities at county schools. The decision to charge $100 per participant for sports and some extracurricular activities has caused an uproar, and a large contingent of parents spoke against the matter Tuesday night during a regularly scheduled board meeting.

Board members agreed it was tough to swallow and asked the superintendent to bring recommendations to the board’s June 21 meeting, to see if they could take pay to play out of the budget.

Superintendent Brenda Blackburn agreed but made it clear that eliminating pay to play would mean cutting spending in another area.

I thought it was interesting to find out that Blacksburg Middle School has 2 security guards. I suppose this would be because Christiansburg is such a dangerous town? There is a fence that surrounds the school and a School Resource Officer, who is from Blacksburg PD in the school. The excuse for this spending was that the school is surrounded by streets and has mobile units. The school has a fence surrounding it, and may I add, the other B’burg Middle was on a busy road, Price’s Fork Road. Can we say frivolous spending? hmmmm no other schools in Montgomery County have security guards.
