Old soldier dies

CRAIG COUNTY – One of Craig’s oldest soldiers, Estial Echols, has died a few months before his 100th birthday.

The World War II Army veteran who was a prisoner of the Germans died March 10 at his home at Johns Creek.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 13, at 11 a.m. at Level Green Christian Church with Bill Frazier and Don Phelps officiating. Interment will follow in the Level Green Christian Church Cemetery.

Military graveside services will be conducted by Craig Valley VFW Post #4491 of New Castle.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Level Green Christian Church.

Arrangements are by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

Echols was featured in a recent front-page article in the Feb. 17 issue of The New Castle Record.
