Conner, Anita Dawn
Anita Dawn Conner, 51, of Salem, died February 12, 2010. She was born March 4, 1958 in Floyd County daughter of Anna Lee Walton of Salem and the late Clyde Richard Conner. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. In addition to her mother she is survived by her son, Jared Johnson; special caregivers David and Carolyn Zimmerman; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were conducted February 16, 2010 at the chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem. Interment followed at Wilson Cemetery. Donations may be made in Anita’s memory to the trust fund for her son, Jared.
Gaylor, Frances Daugherty
Frances Daugherty Gaylor, 68, of Salem died February 8, 2010. Preceding her in death were her mother, Hilda Daugherty, and brother, David B. Daugherty Jr. Survivors include her father, David Daugherty; sons Joseph Harris and fiancé, Tammy, and Jonathan Harris and wife Lynn; brothers Glenn Daugherty, Benjamin C. Daugherty and wife Debbie, and Wayne Daugherty and wife Brenda; sister,Peggy Wertz and husband Ferman; grandchildren Kelly Love, Kaylee Harris, Erin Harris and Kristen Harris; ex-husband and friend Jay Harris; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held February 11 at Lotz Salem Chapel. Interment followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Huffman, Charles Lee “Nubby”
Charles Lee “Nubby” Huffman, 63, of Salem, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Friday, February 12, 2010 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Erma Jo Huffman. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lulu and Darell Blankenship, Amy and Thomas Wright, Lisa and Jim Witt; grandchildren Allen Blankenship and wife, Anna, Kayla Blankenship and friend Travis Young, Morgan and Madelyn Witt; special great-grandson Kaydon “KT” Blankenship. Nubby retired from the City of Salem after more than 30 years of service and during that time he made a lot of life-long friends, including Jerry “JB” Bush and Giles “Hokie” Gobble. Most recently he leaves behind his buddy and long-time neighbor Mark Wilson. Funeral services were held February 16 at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. Interment followed in Sherwood Memorial Park.
Morrison, Herbert “Bert” R. Jr.
Herbert “Bert” R. Morrison Jr., 70, of Salem died February 16, 2010. He was a member of Green Hill Church of the Brethren in Salem. He was employed by Highs Ice Cream in Baltimore, Md., prior to owning and operating Bert’s Bar-B-Cue in Salem for 18 years. He was a dedicated worker for Disaster Response and Warm Project of Roanoke Valley, and was Salem’s “horse-riding Santa” for many years. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Helen L. Morrison. Survivors include his wife Frances M. Morrison, daughters Tracey Morrison Bryant and her husband Reid, of Pennsylvania, Christy Morrison Dilcher and her husband, Jimmy, of Roanoke; step-daughters Shelby Alcorn and Bobby Voorhees of Hardy, Kristy Hall and Garland Snow of Hardy; step-son Nickie Hall, of Shawsville; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother James Morrison and wife, Shirley, of Richmond; niece Debbie Giles and husband, Sandy, of Salem; and great-nephew Scott Giles of Salem. Funeral services will be held at Green Hill Church of the Brethren on Friday, February 19, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Shawn Tanner and the Rev. Jimmy Cannaday officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem.
