The Rev. Alfred Huston Moore, 84, of Roanoke died December 31, 2009. He was born in Salem, grew up in Floyd County and served in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii and the Marshall Islands during World War II. He indulged his love of adventure by hitchhiking to Texas and back and working on the James River Fleet in Newport News. In June 1949 he married Lois Bayse of Salem and answered God’s call to the ministry. They were married 55 years until her death in 2005. After graduation from Allentown Bible Institute in Allentown, Pa., his first pastorate was Christo Pilgrim Holiness Church on Bent Mountain; he also pastored in Christiansburg, Boissevain, Va., and Five Forks Wesleyan Church in Stuart, and filled many pulpits around southwest Virginia as a supply pastor. He retired in 1987 from a secondary career as a painter at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Survivors include two brothers, nine children and spouses, 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by daughter Lois Juanita Moore Owens. A funeral was held Jan. 4 at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Roanoke, with the Rev. Greg Reynolds officiating.
