Mock election has clerk candidates Oliver, Snider tied

By Gwen Johnson

CRAIG COUNTY – The election results are in for a mock election held Friday at Craig County High School – and the students pretty well predicted it.

Paper ballots were passed out to all 240 high school students. Of those, 166 students voted in the mock election, giving the high school a 70 percent voter turnout. According to mock elections nationwide statistics show that students tend to vote the way their parents would vote.

In the race for Craig County Clerk of Court, candidates Sharon Oliver and Danielle Snider racked up 22 percent of the votes with 36 votes each. Trevor Craddock came in third with 20 percent (33 votes); and Bill Frazier with 12 percent (20 votes). Sonja Jones and Betty Wolfe also tied with 7 percent and 12 votes. The third close tie was between Lisa Campbell and incumbent Clerk Sharon Braden with 5 percent, with 9 votes for Campbell and 8 for Braden.

Delegate Morgan Griffith, a Republican, won the 9th District Congressional seat in the high school voting by 52 percent (86 votes), with incumbent Rick Boucher, a Democrat, trailing behind with 31 percent (51 votes), and Independent candidate Jeremiah Heaton at 17 percent (29 votes).

The 9th Congressional seat includes Craig County and stretches to Abingdon.

Students who wanted to take part in the mock election returned their ballots to their teachers. History teacher John Crenshaw, tallied the votes and Jordan Labiosa, president of the Young Republicans Party, verified the count.

Editor’s note: Students were uncannily accurate in their predictions: Morgan Griffith won the 9th district in Tuesday’s real election and Sharon Oliver won the Craig County Clerk of Circuit Court position. Results from Craig County’s General Election Nov. 2 were too late for this week’s printed Nov. 3 issue, so look for the breakout of votes by candidate in the Nov. 10 issue.
