Maywood Dr. fire started in couch, two dachshunds rescued
VINTON – Roanoke County Fire Investigators have determined that the house fire on Maywood Drive in Vinton Wednesday evening started in a couch in the living room on the main floor of this single story home, but exactly what sparked the fire has been ruled undetermined.
The fire was contained to the living room after the fire burned out by itself, causing significant smoke and heat damage to the main floor of this house and some smoke damage to the basement floor quarters.
It has now been determined that a male occupant who lived in the basement was home at the time of the fire and smelled smoke and heard a smoke alarm sounding. He went outside to investigate and saw smoke coming from the main floor.
After banging on the front door to make sure no one was home, he went to a neighbor’s house to call 911, Roanoke County fire department officials reported.
Damage estimates are between $30,000 and 40,000.
Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department was called to the fire structure fire at 1024 Maywood about 5:20 p.m.
The first crews on scene found the single story residence full of smoke and heat. Upon further investigation, career and volunteer personnel from Vinton and Mount Pleasant found that the fire had burned itself out leaving significant smoke and heat damage throughout the house. Crews from Roanoke City assisted.
Two dachshund dogs were rescued from the house by firefighters and given oxygen by paramedics on the scene and are expected to be okay.
The two families who rented separate floors in this house are displaced and staying with family.
Fire department officials said this is another great reminder that smoke detectors do save lives. Fire officials are encouraging citizens to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are in good working order.
