Lost hikers rescued

By Meg Hibbert

ROANOKE COUNTY – Two hikers were rescued by volunteer firefighters in woods near Craig County after the women became lost while hiking Dragon’s Tooth Trail in Catawba over the weekend.

Six volunteers from the Masons Cove and Catawba Fire Stations combed the woods around that portion of the Appalachian Trail in Roanoke County for the missing hikers. The women used their cell phone to call 911 at 7:52 p.m. March 6 to report they were lost and needed help finding their way back.

Rescuers located them and escorted them off the trail about 9:30 p.m., according to Jennifer Sexton of Roanoke County Fire & Rescue.

The women were cold and scared, Sexton said, but not injured.
