G. Michael Osborne, 24, who grew up near the New Hope Union Church in Craig County, is being held in the Botetourt County-Craig Regional Jail witout bond after he was charged with setting fire to the church on Rt. 621, Upper Craigs Creek Road.
His Sept. 26 arrest came two weeks to the day after the church burned to the ground, leaving only the front wall and the sign out front.
At a community meeting Sept. 28, Craig County Sheriff Clifford Davidson confirmed after Virginia State Police and a Craig County Deputy arrested Osborne at a second-floor apartment where he was living in New Castle, they confiscated a diary in which he wrote he wanted to burn down the church.
