Elmer Gerald “Bish” Jones, 83, of Roanoke passed away peacefully on Friday, May 14, 2010. He was born July 23, 1926 in the Sinking Creek Valley of Craig County, and was a son of the late Denny W. and Emily Echols Jones. He attended Old Bethel United Methodist Church in Craig County.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Woodruff, brother Zane M. Jones, and granddaughter Emily Caroline Jones.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II during the Occupation of Germany. He retired from Sovran Bank (now Bank of America) as an Assistant Vice President and Manager of the Crossroads Branch. He was an avid golfer and he and his wife, Ocie, traveled to 48 states. Elmer was president of the Williamson Road Kiwanis Club in 1967-1968.
In addition to his loving wife of 60 years, Ocie Craft Jones, he is survived by his son Jerry L. Jones and his wife Caroline of Waynesboro, daughter Carol Canode and husband Sam of Troutville, granddaughters Shannon M. Turner and her husband, Mitchell, of Fincastle; Ann Jones Long and husband H. Davison Long Jr., of Midlothian; grandson Alan Canode of Madison, Wis.; great-grandchildren Alayna Emily Turner, Kylie Brooke Turner and Emily Caroline Long; sister Florene Jones Eakin of Culpeper, and numerous other family members and friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, May 17, at Oakey’s North Chapel, with the Revs. Mitchell Turner and Eric Slusher officiating. Interment followed at the Ross Cemetery in Craig County.
