Jan. 11 set for special election to fill Griffith’s seat
SALEM – A special election to fill Salem Delegate H. Morgan Griffith’s seat representing Salem and part of Roanoke County will be Jan. 11, scheduled by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.
The governor’s office issued a press release today, setting the January date to fill both the seat of Griffith, who was elected to 9th District of the United States Congress that had been Democrat Rick Boucher’s, and for the seat of Virginia Senator Robert Hurt. Hurt will be taking over the 5th District Congressional seat of Tom Periello.
Griffith and Hurt have told the governor they intend to submit letters stating their intentions to resign upon the certification of their election, which is set for Nov. 22 when the Virginia State Board of Elections meets.
The Virginia General Assembly will convene on Jan. 12.
According to the governor’s press release, the anticipated filing and nominating deadlines for candidates who want to participate in the special election would be noon on Nov. 24.
Republican Greg Habeeb has already declared his intention to run for fellow Republican Griffith’s seat in the House of Delegates, which represents Salem and part of Roanoke County.
