Hunter scores 100th goal in Glenvar win over Floyd
SALEM – Glenvar’s Lyndsey Hunter fired from the top of the box and beat the diving Floyd County goalie to the corner of the cage. She turned, smiled, and was engulfed by teammates.
It was just another goal in a 6-1 win over Floyd, but it was special because it was the 100th goal of Hunter’s Glenvar High School soccer career. It’s an amazing feat that only a few feet in the valley have been able to equal.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” said Glenvar coach Jay Goode. “She’s averaged 25 goals a year for four years, and that shows what a consistent player she is.”

When it’s all said and done she may be averaging 30 a year. Lyndsey came into this season with 75 goals but she already has 31 this season with lots of soccer to be played. She scored two more against Floyd and four against Giles Monday night.
She has two more regular season games, probably two tournament games, and a possibility of five more post-season games if Glenvar can pull off some regional and state wins.
“She’s been a great player for our program,” said Goode. “She has a terrific work ethic and a great attitude. She stays after practice to shoot on her own.”
Glenvar is now 8-4-2 overall and 5-1 in the district. After beating Floyd, 6-1, they tied Bath Friday, 2-2, and hammered Giles, 5-0. Hunter had four goals and Jessi Strom had one against Giles.
The Glenvar boys beat Floyd, 4-0, and Bath, 1-0. Jason Ayers scored the only goal against Bath on a header when Cooper Tyree dropped a corner kick softly into the box.
The Highlanders lost to Giles Monday, 3-0, and they now stand at 3-3 in the district in third place. Radford is undefeated in the Three Rivers and Giles has lost once.
“We have as much talent as Giles but we’re not as physical, and that hurts us,” said Glenvar coach Larry Page.
The boys will play host to Auburn on Friday. Next Tuesday both teams host Bath in non-district games.
