House fire probably started near space heater

By Meg Hibbert

SALEM – Fire investigators have determined a blaze that heavily damaged a two-story home on Craig Avenue probably started from combustible things stored too close to a space heater.

The woman who lived in the house at 733 Craig Ave. got out of the house safely, fire department personnel said, but was transported by family members to the hospital to be evaluated.

One member of the Salem Fire & Emergency Medical Services was also slightly injured.

Firefighters who arrived within four minutes after the 911 call at 11:39 a.m. Sept. 19 found heavy smoke and flames coming from the first floor. Chief Pat Counts said they brought the fire under control within 20 minutes.

Twenty-five firefighters and medical personnel from the fire department responded, and personnel and an engine from the Fort Lewis Fire Department stood by in case they were needed while Salem crews were at the house fire.

No damage estimate was immediately available from the Salem Fire Marshal’s Office.
