VINTON – The Vinton/Roanoke County Veterans Monument called “High Ground” will be moving upward today as the columns are set in place.

Thor Construction will carefully place the columns beginning at 2 p.m.  The columns are 16 inches in diameter, 12 foot 2 inches tall with a unique cutout for black granite name plates inscribed with the names of those veterans killed in action.

Each column weighs 2,915 Lbs.  During the past 10 days the lower step, upper step, and floor sections have been installed.  Set atop the columns will be lintels with inscriptions casted inside and outside and bronze medallions representing the six branches of Armed Forces.

The center of the structure will include an artistic centerpiece unique in design complementing the water feature and cast bronze American Flag to be installed.

The total structure will include 91 components. John Kirtley, the general contractor and project manager for the monument said “I am humbled and honored to see this vision come together for our veterans”.
