Goodwin, James “Jim” Edward
James “Jim” Edward Goodwin, 85, passed away in Roanoke County March 5, 2011. He was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Salem to Fred D. and Christine J. Goodwin. He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School then served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
In 1945 he married Rosemary Evelyn Tucker, who passed away in 1982. In 1984 he married Geraldine Horne McNutt, who passed away in 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty J. Evans. Mr. Goodwin lived in Salem and Roanoke most of his life and worked for Mutual of Omaha until his retirement.
He loved the Lord and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for many years where he served as a deacon. He will be remembered by family and friends as a gentleman who remained polite and gracious throughout his illness.
Mr. Goodwin is survived by his four children, James E. Goodwin Jr. and wife, Gail, of Santa Fe, N.M., Vicky Lynn Briggs and husband, Chester, of Roanoke, Carol Lea Lucado and Chuck Cregger of Hardy, Mary Elizabeth Cecil and husband, David, of Wirtz; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three nieces, Debbie McCulloch, Cindy Wickham and Deanna Hewins.
Also surviving are his three stepdaughters, Sharon Shrader and Charlie Shelor of Roanoke, Kim Humphries and husband, Phil, of Richardson, Texas, Debbie Shelor and husband, Ray, of Troutville; six stepgrandchildren and nine great-stepgrandchildren.
There are no words to express the joy and comfort Debbie and Ray Shelor have provided “Jim” faithfully throughout the years.
The family would like to acknowledge Good Samaritan Hospice for their support and care during Mr. Goodwin’s illness and all the prayers and well wishes from so many caring people. A family graveside service was held March 8 at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem with Dr. Phil Humphries officiating.
