GLENVAR – A young Glenvar woman who first attracted national attention for her giant bubblegum bubbles has been crowned Miss Harrisonburg USA.

Arielle Rosmarino was crowned Aug. 6. Now the pageant winner who will turn 20 on Saturday has her sights set on becoming Miss Virginia USA. After that, “I want to be Miss USA,” she said in an interview Aug. 16. She will compete in the Miss Virginia USA pageant in Virginia Beach on Nov. 4-5.

At the Harrisonburg pageant, Rosmarino also won the People’s Choice Award and tied for the Community Service Award with another girl with ties to Salem, Haley Marie Kingery, who was crowned Junior Miss Harrisonburg USA.

It was the first pageant Haley, who is a Cave Spring High School freshman, entered. She will compete in the Tiny Miss Eastern America Pageant in the spring. Her community service was with her youth group at First Christian Church in Salem.

As one of their first official appearances, Haley Kingery  and Rosmarino cheered on participants at the Miss Fredericksburg USA competition Aug. 13.

Haley is the granddaughter of Diana and Fred Simmons of Clearbrook and Doris and Brian Hoffman of Salem.

In the Miss Harrisonburg pageant, Rosmarino and other contestants did not have to do a talent portion. “The pageant is made up of an interview portion, evening wear and swimsuit,” she explained. Each counts one-third of the total score.

They will also appear at the Race for Grace in Spotsylvania on Sept. 11 where Rosmarino, who describes herself as “very competitive,” plans to run the 5-K race to raise money for the cause that fights cancer.

The Radford University junior is already back at college for a two-week training session for resident advisors. She is pursuing a double major in business marketing and management. She also helps manage the RU wrestling club. In 2010, she was crowned Miss Radford University.

Rosmarino graduated with honors from Glenvar High School in 2009. She began participating in pageants in order to win scholarship money for college. Her prize package for winning the Miss Harrisonburg USA title was more than $5,700, and includes the entrance fee for the Miss Virginia USA pageant. Other prizes include free makeup and hair styling from Stand Out Salon in Salem.

Meanwhile, she continues to educate young people and parents about the dangers of risky behavior and ways to prevent them, and to promote the True Beauty Movement sponsored by National American Miss. The movement’s goal is to empower today’s youth to create their own definition of beauty, and to empower today’s girls to find their inner beauty.

Rosmarino won the title of National American Miss Virginia Teen in 2010.

This summer as well as last, she worked as a Diamond Girl for the Salem Red Sox.

The first time she appeared on the pages of the Salem Times-Register was in 2004 when the then-12-year-old won the biggest bubble-gum bubble-blowing contest for the Roanoke Valley that was sponsored by Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum. That earned her and her family a paid trip to New York City and a spot on the NBC “Today” show.

Her brother, Tucker Hudson, who is a junior at Glenvar High School, also began competing in the Dubble Bubble contests after she won second in the nation for her big bubbles.

They have a younger brother, Carsen Cain, who is a fourth grader at Glenvar Elementary School.

Others in Rosmarino’s cheering section are her mother, Tabitha Cain, and her stepfather, Andrew Cain, who live in Salem, and her grandparents, Russ and Paula West of Salem.
