Geocaching Treasure Hunt will be May 12

Geocachers are invited to take up their GPS units to search for treasure on Saturday, May 12, in the fourth annual Amazing Treasure Hunt sponsored by Roanoke County Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism.
The event starts at 11 a.m. at Roanoke County’s Green Ridge Recreation Center and ends at 3 p.m. at the same location.
Individuals and teams can pre-register to ensure their spot or arrive at 10 a.m. that day to register.
Participants will use hand-held GPS units with longitudes and latitudes. At each site there will be a cache or caches and inside, treasure consisting of a gold-colored coin worth 5 points, a silver-colored one worth 3 or “gems” worth 1 point each.
The object is to accumulate as many points as possible, taking only one coin or gem from each location.
Sponsors recommend teams of at least two people, with one in the vehicle acting as navigator. A geocaching tutorial is available at A limited number of GPS units will be available to those who do not bring their own, with a $150 deposit that will be returned upon the safe return of the GPS unit.
In honor of the 10-year-anniversary of the Cache In Trash Out program, trash bags will be provided so participants can also help the environment by picking up any litter they find along their way.
