Gary Dean Fulton, 62, of Fincastle, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Calvin Benjamin Fulton; paternal grandparents, Benjamin Harrison and Channing Padgett Fulton; maternal grandparents, Joseph Milton and Gussie Bowen Beckner; his father-in-law, William (“Bill”) Sayers and grandmother-in-law, Ola LaPrad. Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of 44 years, Carol “Sue” Crigger Fulton; sons, Wesley Dean Fulton and Gavin Neal Fulton; mother, Josephine Beckner Fulton; one grandson; sisters, Darla (John) Allman and Beth (Richard) Looney; his mother-in-law, Aileen Crigger Sayers; brother-in-law, Christopher Sayers.
Gary graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in 1965. He then served in the US Navy Submarine Force from 1965 to 1969. He was involved with the Virginia Jaycees from 1978 to 1983 and helped coach Little League sports from 1976 to 1980. Gary was employed by United Parcel Service for over 31 years as a truck driver, package deliverer, feeder driver and finally moved into a management position before retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Catawba Masonic Lodge and served as its Worshipful Master in 1980.
He was also a member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Daleville. A funeral service was held at Oakey’s North Chapel on Monday, Nov. 9, with the Rev. Richard Ronk and Wayne McGuire officiating. Interment followed in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106 A, Roanoke, 24018.
