Fire attacks Billy’s Barn restaurant

By Meg Hibbert

HANGING ROCK – Only months after it opened in the location where it was known for years, a fire broke out in Billy’s Barn Restaurant at Hanging Rock.

Roanoke County firefighters responded at 11:25 a.m. today, after an employee called 9-1-1. The restaurant is normally closed on Mondays.

There was no immediate word on how much damage was done to the interior of the building, according to Jennifer Conley Sexton of Roanoke County Fire & Rescue.

Salem firefighters and crews Salem and Roanoke County’s Masons Cove, Catawba and Hollins fire stations responded to put out the fire, and spent two hours searching the large attic space, Sexton said, trying to find out where the smoldering fire started so it could be extinguished.

She explained it was difficult to know where the fire originated because of insulation in the attic where the heating and air conditioning equipment is also located.
