Wirtz woman dies in wreck with school bus
CAVE SPRING -A 39-year-old Wirtz woman died in this morning’s (November 13) wreck with a school bus in the 5200 block of Hunting Hills Drive just north of the Hunting Hills Country Club, according to a news release from the Roanoke County Police Department press release.
The female driver of the car that collided with the bus, which was headed to Cave Spring Middle School, was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified Donna Jean Divers of Wirtz. A male passenger in the car was taken to the hospital for what appeared to be serious injuries. He’s been identified as 42-year-old Christopher Duane Garrett of Wirtz. Divers and Garrett were not wearing seatbelts, according to police.
Police say Divers lost control of the Nissan Altima she was driving, slid sideways, and struck the front of the bus. Although the investigation is continuing, police have concluded that speed was a factor in the crash.
There were no serious injuries involving the children or driver of the bus.
The news release said the driver of the school bus has been identified as 69-year-old Elma Lee Roberts of Roanoke. Police say Roberts saw the car in the distance as the driver began to lose control. Roberts then applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid the car, which proceeded to cross the center line and strike the front of the bus.
No children or bus aides were taken to the hospital, according to a release from Roanoke County Police.
The bus had five people aboard – the driver, an aid, and three special education students. The road was closed while the police investigated the crash.
