Mildred Macdonald Wood Coalter of Roanoke died Tuesday, May 18, 2010. She was the daughter of Alberta Scott and Grover C. Wood and granddaughter of Anna Thrasher and W. Garrison Wood. She was predeceased in death by her husband Gilfert Witt Coalter and brother and sister-in-law, Marcus Scott and Marie B. Wood. Mildred graduated from Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary with B.S. Degree in Social Sciences, and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Virginia. She also attended National Business College and The Presbyterian School of Christian Education and was a member of Kappa Delta PI and Honorary Society in Education. She was a teacher and guidance counselor for 28 years in the Salem, Roanoke and Hanover County School Districts. During her summer “vacations,” Mildred served the Girl Scouts of America in many different capacities. She was District Director for the Girl Scout Council of Philadelphia, Executive Director for both the Girl Scout Council of Hagerstown, Md., and the Washington and Alamance County Council of Burlington, N.C. In 1990, Mildred returned to her beloved Salem, spending her final years at Brandon Oaks residence. In addition to her busy professional career, she enjoyed travel, researching her family’s extensive geneology, and was an active member of her Church. Survivors include brother E. Garrison Wood and sister-in-law Jean, formerly of Lynchburg, stepdaughter and son-in-law Jennifer Coalter and James Cullinan Jr., stepson and daughter-in-law Gilfert M. and Barbara Coalter, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nephews Marcus Scott Wood Jr. and Fil Jesse. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced later at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 245 E. Main, Salem. The Coalter family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, (540) 389-5441.
