September 3, 1924-July 5, 2010

When a man lives his life with integrity, principles and morals he leaves a legacy that will last forever. Vince died just as he lived, with grace and dignity, his family surrounding him at his home in New Castle he shared with his “bride”, Mildred. He was a true gentleman who loved his family, his country and his vast number of friends who were blessed to have him walk thru our lives, even for only a brief moment in time.

Vincent and Mildred Humphries

Vince was born in Botetourt County in the Surber section to Lula and Ellis Humphries. He was one of four children. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1941, where he enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 serving our country until 1946. He was a proud veteran of WW11 and never ceased talking about his experiences in the service. He was a member of AmVets Post 121 in St. Clair Shores, Mich., of which he was State Commander in 1968-1969.

In 1947 he married Lorraine Reinke and moved to East Detroit where he and his wife raised three children who remain in Michigan. Rhea Mader, Dianna Rees and husband John, Craig (who was named after Craigs Creek in Botetourt County) and Gayle Humphries. He also has nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In 1960 Vince founded J & H Hydraulics in Madison Heights, Mich., which his son currently operates.

His wife Lorraine passed away in 1992. Vince knew his heart never left the hills and hollows of Rich Patch. With that in mind he returned to Roaring Run and purchased a cabin. One weekend in 1993, he attended the Homecoming at King Memorial Church in Oriskany, the church he attended while he was a child. While there he inquired as to the whereabouts of an elementary school sweetheart who happened to be there also. And the rest is history. A love story was written with Mildred Southworth whom he called “my bride”. They became husband and wife June 18, 1994, and he became a father to Chip Southworth (now deceased) and his wife Karen, Trena Boudreaux of New Castle, and Spencer Southworth and his wife Amy of Edgewood, Ky. He also became a grandfather to nine more grandchildren.

Vince instantly became active in the community serving on numerous volunteer committees. He was a founding member of “The Wrecking Crew” at New Castle Methodist Church where he remained a member until his death. He worked tirelessly for the Fairground Association raising money for “The Field of Dreams”, the new Sports Complex to be built in Craig County.

Vince loved his coffee with his buddies at “The Round Table” every morning, planning various new projects for the county, always with his yellow note pad in hand.

Arrangements were handled by Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle, VA. Services were held July 7 at Paitsel Funeral Home. His remains will be flown to Warren, Mich., where services will be held at Duross-Verhayden Funeral Home. Burial was at Cadillac Memorial Cemetery in Clinton Township, Mich.

In lieu of flowers monetary donations may be made to either the New Castle United Methodist Chruch Mens Group, PO Box 13, New Castle, VA 24127 or the Craig County Fairground Assoc., c/o Eugene Hannah, 172 Lemar Drive, New Castle, VA 24127.

It has been said that a measure of a man’s worth can be found in the number of friends he leaves behind. Vince, your legacy is one of a great number of friends who loved you, respected you; your family is better for having you as our Dad and Grandfather; your “bride” will forever love you, and most of all, we will forever miss you. We love you, now and always.
