Butch Church will announce run for another term
ROANOKE COUNTY – Joe “Butch” Church plans to announce he is running for re-election tomorrow, July 7, for the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors. He plans to make his announcement at 5:30 p.m. at the Green Ridge Recreation Center in North Roanoke County.
Church, who is the current chairman of the board, represents the Catawba Magisterial District that includes Glenvar, part of Northside and Catawba. He was first elected in 1999, when he ran as a Republican. Since then he has run as an independent.
Two challengers have already announced they want Church’s seat. The most recent was Catawba resident David Drake, a volunteer firefighter in Mason’s Cove, and part-time college instructor at Virginia Western Community College.
First to announce was Carter Turner, who lives in the Glenvar area as does Church. He is a religion professor at Radford University. It is his first run for Supervisor. Turner ran as a Democrat against Republican H. Morgan Griffith, who was re-elected to the House of Delegates representing Salem. Since then Griffith was elected to the United States House of Representatives, for the 9th District.
