Jimmye Inez Pratt Burton of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and formerly of Vinton and Salem and Rogersville, Tenn., died Oct. 3, 2011, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Mrs. Burton was born on Aug. 19, 1920, in Church Hill, Tenn.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Arnold R. Burton. Mr. Burton was Superintendent of the Roanoke County Schools for 15 years in the ’70s and early ’80s. Mrs. Burton was the daughter of the late Jim and Mary Bell Galloway Pratt of Church Hill. She had 11 brother and sisters who are all now deceased.
Mrs. Burton is survived by one daughter, Suzanne BurtonYoung, and husband Bob, of Tuscaloosa and one grandson, Christopher Jason Burton Young, and wife Angie, also of Tuscaloosa.
Mrs. Burton was well-known in her home town, in eastern Tennessee, for being a fine athlete. In her youth, she played basketball and softball for the Tennessee Eastman Corp in Kingsport, Tenn., and was a long-time lifeguard at Silver Lake Swim Club in Church Hill, Tenn. She was such a fine swimmer, she was invited to join the Ether Williams Aquacade in Hollywood in 1938.
Mrs. Burton lived in Roanoke for 35 years with her husband and daughter as he worked in the Roanoke County School System. After his death in 1994, she moved to Tuscaloosa to be near her daughter and grandson.
A private service will be held, at a future date, in Church Hill, Tenn.
