SALEM – The medical examiner’s office is working to identify a body that was found today just off the interstate in Salem.
According to Virginia State Police, just before 10 a.m. a VDOT contractor who was mowing near the on ramp at mile marker 137 South of Interstate 81 discovered a decomposed body in a wooded area slightly concealed by leaves.
State Police Sgt. Bob Carpentieri said Tuesday afternoon that it had not yet been determined if the person was a male or female, and said the body appeared to have been there for at least a few weeks. He said the discovery of the body and the ensuing investigation of the area forced the closure of the ramp from about 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.
The body was transported to the medical examiner’s office, and Carpentieri said he could not give a timetable as to how long it might take to identify. He said it had not yet been determined if foul play was involved.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the incident.
