This past Friday night’s matchup between No. 5 Giles (6-5) and No. 4. Radford (8-3) in the opening round of the expanded Region C, Division 2 was not pretty, in fact, it was downright ugly, as the Bobcats claimed a 14-6 victory against the Spartans. Meeting for the second time in seven day’s, fans were waiting for this re-match. Judging by all the trash-talk on various message boards, this game was going to be a battle.
Well folks, they got that part right, as it was battle to hold on to the ball, as the Bobcats turned the ball over five times and the Spartans coughed it up four times.
Radford took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 40-yard pass from Dontae Carter to Brian Thomspon. Giles would finally score in the third quarter on a 3-yard scamper by Andrew Eppling.
The PAT failed, thus making it 7-6. The Bobcats would secure the victory in the fourth quarter on a 47-yard run by D.J. Palmer and Michael Goodman’s PAT to make the final 14-6, Cats.
Palmer had a big night for Radford, as he had two interceptions, multiple pass breakups and a 47-yard touchdown run. He finished with 187 yards of total offense.
Giles, who had 208 yards rushing, was led by Andrew Eppling’s 70 yards.
Dontae Carter completed 7-of-10 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Bobcats.
Radford will head to Wytheville this Friday night, as they meet No. 1 seed George Wythe (7-3), in the Region C, Division 2 semifinals.
