Alternative school students will attend HopeTree Academy in Salem

Students from Roanoke County who need small classes and one-on-one instruction in an alternative school will soon be getting that attention at HopeTree Academy in Salem.

The academy is the newest facility on the HopeTree campus, formerly known as the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home. It was dedicated Sept. 11.

HopeTree made the announcement about the Roanoke County students Oct. 19. That was after parents in the Cave Spring area objected to the Roanoke County School Board’s plan to move alternative school students from the Roland E. Cook Alternative School in Vinton, which is due to be closed, to a wing at Cave Spring High School.

“Roanoke County alternative education students can come immediately,” said Dr. Tommy Barber, HopeTree’s Education Director, on Monday. “We’ve already accepted one student.” The school has 23 students currently, 14 of whom are residential students, Barber said.
