Abbott, Edwin Vaden

Edwin Vaden Abbott, 87, of Johns Creek in Craig County let go of the bonds of this earth on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, to dwell in a better place with his Lord.

Ed was born on Sept. 21, 1923, in Buena Vista, to Kate and Hezzie Abbott. The oldest of four children to survive to adulthood, Ed grew up in New Castle during the Great Depression and graduated in 1941 from New Castle High School. He married the love of his life, Curtis Mae Caldwell, on Aug. 10, 1944. He left his young bride to serve in the U.S. Navy during the remainder of World War II aboard a mine sweeper leaving Norfolk for the Pacific Theater and on bases in Hawaii.

Ed graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Business Administration thanks in part to the G.I. Bill of Rights, and then worked for Westvaco Corporation in Covington for 40 years in the accounting and technical service areas.

During his 40 years in Covington, he and Curtis raised two sons, Mike and Jay Abbott, and were very active in support of the Covington High School Band Boosters, CHS Football, other athletics, and the CP Jones Memorial Library.

They attended Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. He retired in 1990 and they moved to Johns Creek in 1993.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Curtis Caldwell Abbott; son Mike Abbott of Portsmouth and son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Abbott (Lisa), Belmont, MI.; grandchildren Christian Harris, Lindsay Abbott, David Abbott, Sarah Abbott Keck, and Ruth Abbott, and great-granddaughter Victoria Faughnan, and two brothers, Robert Abbott of New Castle and Jack Abbott of Sumpter, S.C.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Louise Abbott and Lois Abbott Ring, his brother Billy Abbott, and his grandson Samuel Tae Abbott.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Bethel United Methodist Church with Pastor Penny Wilson officiating.
